Join Alice escaping winter to explore Aphrodite’s Isle, where spring comes early and orchids abound. Alongside a wide range of species, including endemic and regional specialities such as Orchis punctulata, Ophrys elegans and Ophrys kotschyi, there’s a great range of other spring flowers to enjoy, including Tulips, Crocuses and more. Butterflies such as Paphos Blue and Eastern Festoon will be on the wing, and among the birds, we can expect to see species such as Cyprus Wheatear, Sardinian Warbler, Zitting Cisticola, Chukar and Black Francolin, and we may encounter migratory species like Siberian Stonechat or Black Redstart. We’ll also take in some culture with a visit to the ruins of Kourion, one of the island’s most important city-kingdoms in antiquity. The Cyprus in Spring holiday with Greenwings is designed for a leisurely pace to enable photography and enjoy all aspects of the island and its nature.
For an insight into the species you might see, you might enjoy reading the two blogs Alice wrote about other travels to the island at the same time of year and visiting some of the same areas. Cyprus in Spring Part 1 and Cypriot Spring Part 2.

Alice looks forward to a return trip to Sicily to lead a Wildlife at Leisure tour for Greentours alongside Stefano Doglio. These tours take a relaxed pace and balance the wildlife and botany with time to socialise and enjoy the local culture and food in the evenings.
In spring, Monte Ible’s dry limestone slopes are ablaze with flowers. Anemones, Irises and Asphodels are abundant in the abandoned fields and terraces above Syracusa, some of which also boast a dozen or more orchid species. Stunning Pink Butterfly Orchids are joined by Giant and Man Orchids. Sicily is a hotspot in bee orchid evolution with profuse Sawfly Orchid, colourful Ophrys bertolonii and fur-rimmed Mirror Orchid. Yellow-edged Ophrys biancae, Ophrys lunulata and Ophrys lacaitae are found nowhere else.
We’ll explore limestone gorges, wooded valleys and coastal reserves where dune flora will keep us busy when we’re not looking at Flamingos, Black-winged Stilts and Slender-billed Gulls!
If you want an insight into what we might see, you might like the blog that Alice wrote about a previous trip, Sunny Spring in Sicily: a floral wonderland.

Join Alice in exploring the beautiful Italian island of Sardinia with Greentours this spring in search of wildflowers (especially orchids), birds, reptiles and amphibians and more! The ‘lost world’ of the Giara di Gesturi is a landscape as unexpected as it is strangely beautiful. Outcrops of pinky-black basalt and prehistoric ‘nuraghi’ emerge from marshy meadows and dwarf Cork Oak woodlands on plateaux two thousand feet above sea level. Among it all, we find a range of beautiful flowers including Romulea and Crocus, endemic Peonies, and a beguiling variety of orchids, ranging from small green Gennaria diphylla to aptly named Giant Orchid via a range of pretty bee orchids such as the endemic Ophrys chestermannii.
Alice has written a blog about a personal trip to a different part of the island on which she encountered a few of the same species as can be expected on this holiday: Wild Sardinia.

Wildflower highlights include numerous orchids such as Lady’s Slipper, Coral Root, Bird’s Nest, Globe, Elder-flowered, Frog and several Helleborines, among others. Other floral highlights include Martagon Lily, Herb Paris, Lily-of-the-Valley and many more. There’s also a wonderful array of butterflies, with early season species like Chequered Skipper and Duke of Burgundy mingling with summer highlights like Apollo, Marbled Fritillary, Woodland Brown and Scarce Copper. This part of France is rich in biodiversity, and we may also see birds like Alpine Swift, Griffon Vulture and Crested Tit, or mammals such as Chamois or Marmot if we’re lucky. Weather-permitting, a moth trap with be run in the hotel garden too.
If you’re interested in what we might encounter, you might like to read a blog from a past journey to the area, The Vercors, a little-known treasure trove in southeast France.
